Is this an ID number? Does it stand for anything that needs translating?

Amy Christie (asker) May 20, 2008: Only that he did military service for a year and was a 'fusilier commando' I was thingking that NIA = numero d'identification aerienne/armee then the AE is for aerienne. I have found a few supporting refs, but nothing concrete.
Angus Peacock May 20, 2008: I'm not convinced it's an ID number. They may indicate medals / decorations or refer to certain skills or flying abilities. Any other info available?
