(name) NIA AE 12345 M

French to English Tech/Engineering Military / Defense military service (as a pilot)
A certificate of military service for someone serving as a pilot in the 'region aerienne'.

Le Colonel XXX certifie que le Aviateur YYY NIA AE 12345 M (not exact numbers), ne' le (date), a' (place)...

Is this an ID number? Does it stand for anything that needs translating?

Only that he did military service for a year and was a 'fusilier commando' I was thingking that NIA = numero d'identification aerienne/armee then the AE is for aerienne. I have found a few supporting refs, but nothing concrete.

I'm not convinced it's an ID number. They may indicate medals / decorations or refer to certain skills or flying abilities. Any other info available?

Fairly sure this is an ID number for the army or air force.
