Italian term

la svolta politica

Though the ideas were already in the air in the early 1800s, the real change in the political mindset of the people took place rather quickly between 1848 and 1860, and turned out to have such a profound impact on the the thinking of everyone that it would be totally unfair to accuse the generation of that period to have failed to change their thinking with any degree of similar immediacy.

agree CLS Lexi-tech : but not on mindset, the changes were in the political asset of Italy, with Italian Unity. Ciao

poltical turning point

"Turning point" is one possible translation of "svolta" that I think would work quite well here.

The phrase \"political turning point\" gets 332 hits in Yahoo, so it\'s quite a common phrase in English. Here\'s one example of its use:

\"Mexico\'s Mañana Is Now

Mexico appears headed for the political turning point it\'s been approaching for over a decade. The Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), in power for 71 years, could be dethroned.\"

Here\'s another quite good example:

\"Sinn Fein is the second biggest nationalist party in Northern Ireland and has grown out of the republican movement against a British presence in any part of Ireland.
The party, which was long regarded by its critics as merely a mouthpiece for the IRA, has sought to position itself as the modern face of the republican movement, emphasising its support for the peace process and broader nationalist goals.

It is a signatory and supporter of the Good Friday Agreement signed in 1998 which created the devolved bodies and power-sharing arrangements between both of Northern Ireland\'s communities.

Its support for the agreement, coming four years after the IRA called its first ceasefire in almost 30 years, proved a major political turning point for republicans.\"

The political turnover point ...

In politics everything can happen.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Rowan Morrell : Turnover? That doesn't have quite the right ring to it, at least not for me.

marked transformation of the political scene

I prefer this or something along these lines to the more literal and forced turn/over solutions. To be more literary even the Shakespearian "sea change" might be appropriate.

major political shift

major political transformation

I like "turning point" but the rest of the sentence runs counter to "point". The author is talking about a period of time of 12 years and, specifically, about a "turning point in Italian history", the major transformation called war for independence and Italian unity. Italy was born officially as a unified state in 1860.

turning point

Given the context, "political" is obvious...but "turnover" is clearly inappropiate to my oversensitive mindset.
