To help you decide:
generally a SPOOL is wide, allowing several or many "winds" of the material along the length of the spool. (for example, a spool of thread)
A REEL is narrow and generally allows a single winding of the material within its flanges, as in the case of cinematographic film or adhesive tape.
A COIL is any sort of wound-up material, and can even be without any supporting structure such as a reel or spool.
