Spanish term

se es más hombre [sic] si se es ciudadano

Spanish to English Social Sciences Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc.
Más a fondo, y de interés para el contexto contemporáneo, la conceptualización moderna de la ciudadanía crea individuos que son: "siempre [individuos] de una nación estado; ambas nociones: estado nacional e individuo se co-constituyen, a tal punto que la pertenencia a un estado jerarquiza lo humano, se es más hombre [sic] si se es ciudadano" (author, year, page).

I'm not certain if the [sic] is directed at the reference to "hombre" (which should of course be the gender-neutral "person" or "individual") or if it has something to do with the sentence's construction, which is over my head!

Discussion

MarinaM Sep 26, 2007:
Si se trata d un texto sobre los derechos de la mujer o algo así, el "sic" se refiere obviamente a hombre y funciona como marca de ironía por el uso genérico del masculino. Otra opción sería entrecomillar "man" (sin el 'sic).

being a citizen makes you more of a man [sic]

Having seen your next question, I definitely get the feeling the [sic] refers to the use of hombre instead of persona/ser humano/individuo, and you should therefore translate it as literally as possible

one is more of a person when one is a citizen

A slightly more formal option, given what seems to be the tone of the text.
