German term

zurückdrehen

German to English Tech/Engineering Mechanics / Mech Engineering handbrake
I have found "turn back" in the KudoZ glossaries but I am not certain that it best describes what is going on here.

Discussion

Ken Cox Sep 26, 2007:
If it's a hydraulic brake system, that would be (air) bleeding and bleed screw. If it's an air brake system, I don't see where an explosion hazard would arise.

As the text apparently refers to a drawing, do you have the drawing?
Robin Salmon (X) (asker) Sep 26, 2007:
I am taking "Lüftschraube" to mean "ventilation screw", as there seems to be a ventilation system for the brake.
Paula Trucks-Pape Sep 26, 2007:
Is this a Lüftschraube or a Luftschraube (propeller)? If it's a type of screw, I'd suggest "retighten", otherwise, "turn back" is what you want for a propeller.

retightened, tightened

I suspect that here 'Lüftschraube' actually means Entlüftungsschraube.

In this case, 'züruck' should be understood in the sense of a brake system bleeding procedure in which a bleed screw is first loosened, the air is bled out of the system, and the bleed screw is then retightened.

If this context is not directly and specifically present in the text where the phrase appears, IMO you should reword this in English along the lines of 'Bleed screws loose', since the normal operating state is with the screws firmly tightened.

rotate back(wards), reverse

It's pretty hard to find any translation other than "turn back" for zurückdrehen, but two other possibilities are "rotate back" (or maybe rotate backwards?) and "reverse". Not sure that either of these greatly improve on "turn back", though.
