Me tiene intrigado esta pregunta (de eso se tratan las novelas policíacas, ¿no?) Por el contexto, parece que el tipo escogió una prenda hecha de ese tartán, que la tienda que cita Kathleen ofrece en tela 100% lana. No parece tener que ver con pescados.

It is more commonly written "Arbroath smokie". My ex-company used to have a factory in Arbroath and whenever people went there they came back with packs of Arbroath smokies - for breakfast eating, so don't worry about meeting one Henry.

An Arbroath smoky is a smoked haddock (eglefino ahumado) - a speciality of the town. Woolly? Perhaps it is some sort of slang I have not heard of for rancid...? Or perhaps the text gives a hint of explanation?

what´s the setting for your novel? Arbroath is a kind of "roughish" seaside village on the east coast of Scotland, south of Aberdeen. So it might refer to that area? I´m just guessing though...

Peludo tartán arbroath

Difícil, muy difícil. Arbroath smoky es el tartán del pueblo de Arbroath en el condado de Angus en Escocia. Es de un color rojo oscuro con rayas azules que forman grandes cuadros. El texto no nombra la prenda confeccionada de dicho tartán. (¿No se habría mencionado antes en la historia para que quedara más claro?) En todo caso creo que se puede dejar igual de ambiguo con el uso del *tartán* no más.

Según The Tartan Store mencionada arriba, el nombre el tartán es Arbroath smokie, así que humeante no viene al caso, creo.
