If you wish to choose a mild term, then 'down-titration' is a suitable alternative. (there are several old Kudoz questions on up /down titration)

Of course I know that patient withdrawal is something different - I only wanted to give a few examples of withdrawal in different contexts (conveying neutral meanings).

@Cetacea, do you have the same negative connotations with "drug"? What about the differentiation between Arzneimittel vs. Droge?

And: We talk about Ausstieg, noch just Ende der Behandlung, and about opiods, so withdrawal is suitable IMO.
