a person authorized to represent a party in proceedings, sometimes also referred to as 'attorney of record'
Peer comment(s):

agree gangels (X) : The one and only correct definition

agree Dr. Fred Thomson : Absolutely right. This person is not just an attorney at law, but the attorney who is reprsenting a party to the suit. You can say: counsel for defendant (or plaintiff).

agree msebold : Also a US term (having a "right to counsel").

agree Beate Lutzebaeck : This is certainly a good solution - however, in defence of Kathi's answer (and specifically to Lydia): a Referendar would act as a solicitor (authorised by Untervollmacht of fully qualified solicitor)

attorney at law

Depending on the country the term is referred.
In English law a public officer belonging to the superior courts of common law at Westminster, who conducted legal proceedings on behalf of others, called his clients; he answered to solicitor in the courts of chancery. It was provided by the judicature act that solicitors, attorney, or proctors (omissis)shall be called "solicitors of the supreme court"
Solicitor is "chief law officer of city or town or other governmental body or department".
