Hi def,

Marine animal names are often a controversial subject (if you can get really controversial over shellfish that is).

You don't have to be so strict over a restaurant menu I suppose and matter of precision can give way to matters of appeal.

Nonetheless, I just stumbled across an interesting FAO thesaurus which allows term search and also tells you (check the Legend for Relationships link at the bottom of the page) which terms should be favoured instead of others. In a way it could be a sort of "false friend" detector.

Beyond this actual case, it may help you for the rest of the menu and for future assignements.

In this particular case the use of "razor shells" is recommended instead of razor clams and jackknife clams, but they probably weren't thinking of first courses when they compiled the list.

Me again.

Just to say that what I understand as razor fish are a funny type of fish that look like tinned anchovies and swim upright. Lots of pics to be found.

One of the reasons for marine animal names to vary so much is that many have been fished or simply sighted by local communities for centuries and have received different names over the years, so what to one community may have looked like a "sunfish" to another might have looked like a "pez luna". On occasions a different name can be used just a few miles further up the coast.

Here in the Canaries we have lots of fish which are also found on the Spanish mainland coast (mainly Atlantic seaboard), but their names are neraly always different.
