This is the way they are known in the US, although 'cockle clams' is a lesser used alternative.

disagree Idoia Echenique : Scallops are called "vieiras" in Spain (Pecten jacobaeus and Pecten maximus). The "berberecho" is Cerastoderma edulis.

'Vieras' are the large scallops, what the french call coquille San Jaques, 'berberechos' are the small ones.
