Comment: "Thank you Claire, I think I can use "overspending" to some effect. Thanks also in particular to Vittorio for your "off-budget" proposal, which will certainly be useful in my context. Thanks of course also to Anna Carola for a sensible answer and to Alessando: "breakthrough" doesn't really convey the idea and its primary meaning of "new discovery" makes it unsuitable for my context, but thanks for your input anyway
