These are merely felony crimes...serious crimes...as opposed to misdeameanors...
I really don't think social impact has anything to do with it in English...

This seems to say it, though it might not be a precise criminological term.

Based on Jane\'s comment, some options might be \"high-impact felonies\", \"high social impact felonies\", or the like. It seems to me that \"felony\" or \"felony crime\" by itself is a purely legal term, while the Spanish phrase has a sociological element. For example, insider stock trading would be a felony crime but might not be a \"delito de mayor connotación social\" as intended here. On the other hand, as I mentioned in my response below, \"felony\" alone might be perfectly adequate in the greater context.

: i think this is a literal translation..the idea is felony crime..

You may be right. The word "felony" by itself could be sufficient, but doesn't seem to quite capture the emphasis of the Spanish phrase.

: No, I don't agree with Jane on this one, I think you've got it right. A felony is just any serious crime and here it emphasizes an impact on society which is not necessarily the same thing.

: there are plenty of felonies that don't fit the original's criterion

Comment: "I'm not sure how to add a note, so I will put it here. I have found several internet sources listing this same basic group of crimes as "index crimes""
