English to Portuguese: Sign Language
Source text - English Until recently, hearing parents were often discouraged from learning sign language in the hopes that avoidance of sign language and therapeutic presentation of speech would result in improved spoken language acquisition. Research does not suggest, however, that the avoidance of sign languages does improve speech abilities; in fact, much evidence suggests that, among the profoundly deaf, better speech, lip-reading, and reading abilities are shown by native signers. In recent years it has therefore begun to be more common practice to encourage hearing parents of deaf children to learn to sign, and to expose deaf children to sign languages from early in life.

Source text - English “FNV started this project because of a number of interconnected reasons: we noticed for example that decisions affecting employees working for multinational enterprises are more and more taken at international level. Trade unions however often still only operate at national (or even regional or local) level. We also realised that we don’t know enough about how Dutch multinationals are behaving abroad and that we don’t really know our colleagues working for the same company in other countries. We think that unions cannot stay behind: we have to get connected internationally. And by doing so, we aim to improve the social policies of the Dutch companies, and create an international negotiating position for the unions”.

Translation - English Continuing drought reports and the evidence of crop losses may justify new high trends in soybean prices. However, those who believe that quotations will continue to rise for a while are mistaken. As world offer is estimated to be high this crop year, with consequent accumulated stocks, the long-term trend is still downward. Despite the smaller than expected Brazilian production, the USA’s crop is confirming an increased yield. Numbers published by the USDA in February show USA’s production at 85.7 million tons, in contrast to the 66.8 million tons of the 2003/04 crop. American stocks should jump from 3.05 to 12.52 million tons, the most since 1985/86. For the 2005/06 crop, the first USDA projections (calculated without numbers of field assessment, not expected to happen until the end of March) point to an increased production, above 78 million tons, thus maintaining a scenario of extensive offer of soybeans to the market.

Source text - English Worldwide there is a real drive for corporate social responsibility and most transnationals have codes of conduct that commit them to the abolition of all forms of slavery, child and forced labour throughout their supply chains. Early indications are that this is bringing significant improvements in the first tier of suppliers, but it is proving much more difficult to monitor and enforce further down the supply chain. It is clear that in an age of globalisation, “just in time supplies” and rapid changes in supply patterns to find the best prices, only close co-operation among transnationals, governments, trade unions and NGOs is likely to end the use of slave labour in the global market.

Translation - English Fish, like other animals, consume food until they meet their energy needs (Kaushik e Médale, 1994). This statement has been confirmed in the present study, where fingerlings fed the highest energy densities (3300 and 3600 kcal/kg) reached satiation before the others, with a significant decrease in food intake. The lowest food intake affected growth negatively, especially in the 3600 kcal/kg concentration and 5.3 CHO:L ratio and 33000 and 36000 kcal/kg concentrations and 12.8 CHO:L ratio diets, suggesting that protein or other nutrient might not have been consumed in adequate amounts (Ellis e Reigh, 1991; Silverstein et al., 1999; Watanabe et al., 2001). In the 12.8 CHO:L ratio diet, energy densities were increased especially through addition of carbohydrates. According to the results, fish were not able to use this nutrient efficiently as an energy source. For this reason, part of the dietary protein might have been used to generate energy, since this is the preferred source of energy in metabolic routes of fish (Hepher, 1988). The relative higher consumption of diets with higher CHO:L ratios (12.8) suggests a lower digestibility and utilisation of carbohydrates as a source of energy by piracanjuba fingerlings, corroborating the known relationship between food intake and the concentration of digestible energy rather than crude energy of diets (Kaushik & Oliva-Teles, 1985).

Translation - English As it is well known, regulated prices have been the major cause of inflation in recent years. As we can see in the graph 1, the numbers for regulated prices have been well above free price numbers. This behavior reflects the fact that a great part of the regulated items is influenced, directly or indirectly, by the IGPs (General Price Index), which is, in its turn, influenced by the foreign exchange rate. As the IGP demonstrated a more consistent appreciation path only in mid 2003, it is only in 2006 that we will be able to see this group of products bringing inflation down.

Source text - English Our sales and revenues have grown consistently at more than 7 percent annually for a decade and this growth is sustainable. Improving productivity and innovation have resulted in profit-per-share growth in double digits and superior valuation, evidenced by a price-to-earnings ratio in the top half of the S&P 500 companies. Even though we service cyclical markets, we deliver consistently attractive earnings and have raised our annual dividends every year. Our fully integrated global manufacturing presence and supplier base provide a natural hedge against currency swings. We invest in our future through research and development for our products and services and capital spending to maintain modern and highly efficient operations. We maintain well-funded retiree benefit plans to meet future obligations and use share buybacks to reward stockholders while maintaining appropriate leverage of our strong balance sheet, which readily sustains our investment grade credit rating.

Source text - English Secondly, the clear-cut boundaries as they were drawn during simple modernity between state, market and civil society, started to shift and change (Spaargaren, Mol and Buttel, 2000). All kind of hybrid arrangements in between and beyond these three institutions were identified as new Institutions that were supposedly or actually governing environmental flows: environmental subpolitics, public-private partnerships, market-actors which took on board state-tasks, states that started to behave like market actors, private interest governments which mediated between failing states and opportunist market actors, environmental NGO’s starting to behave like states or even multinationals, etc. It seemed that the traditional division of state, market, civil society lost much of its adequacy to analyze the arrangements and institutions that governed environmental flows at the turn of the millennium. Of course, there have always been institutions in-between, but now it looked as if the exceptions that used to fortify the rule became the rule itself.
