scrub / scrubland
Scrub land is covered with a mixture of shrub and ground flora. It may contain mature trees but must be predominantly saplings, shrubs and non woody plants. It provides a habitat for open space loving species, particularly invertebrates. It may be present as a result of woodland clearance in which case it will be temporary, reverting back to woodland as neighbouring trees regenerate and grow. However, some permanent scrub land exists where the site is inhospitable to trees due to pollution, heavy grazing, aggressive vegetation or climatic/soil factors.

The highest level, which includes the mountain and volcano peaks and is almost devoid of vegetation, is referred to as panizo because it “raises minerals”. The strata immediately below are called **pajonal**, a reference to the tough Gramineae or pajas bravas that dominate the landscape cover at this level. Further down is the tolar, the collective vernacular term for various species of bush that together with Cactaceae are most numerous in these strata. The lower limit of vegetation, where the tolar is sparse and less varied and the landscape becomes a plain, is known as the pampa...
