Not so sure about this and can't even find 'en motivation' at the beginning of a sentence, but I think I've seen it before

: I agree more with parts of your explanation than with your proposed translation. I think it is a reason or grounds but don't understand how preliminary comes into it.

Preliminary as it is said first as a backdrop to what is to come but if the asker changes it to sth like, 'general observation' , that is fine. Thanks for the confirmation of meaning which is where I had doubts
