Estoy trabada en esta frase debido a estas tres palabras. Os doy el contexto más próximo:

That dhimmi status that Islamic states have traditionally given to Jews and Christians –and actually any other traditional faith except Arab idolaters– has been the subject of much criticism recently. There are writers who present it as a slavish life that Islam imposes on non-Muslims.
