Aida, encargada con motivo de la inauguración del Canal de Suez, se estrenó la Nochebuena de 1871 en El Cairo, dos años después de la inauguración formal. Verdi escogió la historia del egiptólogo Auguste Mariette, plasmada en el libreto de Antonio Ghislanzoni y Camille du Locle, sobre los amores con final trágico del capitán egipcio Radamès con una esclava etíope, que en realidad es la princesa Aida.
