German term

Prüfstromquelle

Discussion

Richard Stephen May 7, 2009:
test power Meant here was 'power for testing' not an imperative sentence instructing the reader to 'test' something. If put into a sentence this would be clear: 'The test object was connected directly to the test power source'.
David Williams May 7, 2009:
Seems clear to me 'test power source' would surely be "Stromquelle prüfen" (an instruction), would it not? On the other hand, "wurde direkt mit der Prüfstromquelle verbunden" is clearly using Prüfstromquelle as a noun (not an instruction).
Richard Stephen May 7, 2009:
check with client The only way to resolve this question is to ask the client if he means 'Stromquelle für Prüfzwecke' or 'Quelle für Prüfstrom'. The former would be 'test power source' the latter 'test current source'.
David Williams May 7, 2009:
stromquelle = power source I'd definitely say that 'stromquelle' on its own is 'power source'. As I understand it though, a 'Prüfstromquelle' is a "quelle of a Prüfstrom", not a "Prüf of a stromquelle", i.e. 'Prüfstrom-quelle' rather than 'Prüf-stromquelle'.
Richard Stephen May 7, 2009:
power - current A 'current' source is a power source for suppling current at a constant rate (by varying the voltage). A standard power source would normally supply power at a constant voltage and the current would vary with the load. Perhaps you should check with your client before deciding to call it either a 'power' or 'current' source.
Richard Stephen May 7, 2009:
'Tripping' 'Tripping' current probably refers to some specific test on something like circuit breakers - I would hesitate to use it as a general term for 'Prüfstrom'. 'Tripping' current should actually be 'Auslösestrom' - or one should at least be able to substitute 'Auslösestom' in the original sentence. 'Trennschalter' have a very low current switching capacity and are not 'tripping' devices. Assuming the client has used the German word correctly, 'tripping' would not fit.
David Williams May 6, 2009:
conny (asker) May 6, 2009:

test current source

Prüfstrom = test current
(Siemens Dictionary of Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering and Automation)

e.g.
The first switch circuit also comprises a first test current source for providing a first test current flow through the first test current switch, and a first current sensor for measuring a current flow through the first signal current switch.

Alternatively, we can also put in a test current source and measure the resulting voltageacross it.

agree Colin Rowe : "test current source" + "Prüfstromquelle" gets (some) ghits, "test power source" + "Prüfstromquelle" does not. // Not that Google "knows" everything!

test power source

Since the context is a Prüfbericht (test report) and a Prüfaufbau (test setup), I would have thought that "test power source" ought to fit here.

The internal impedance of the *test power source* shall be low enough for its effects on the test results to be negligible.

1.4 The range of magnetic flux densities is governed by the properties of the test specimens and the instruments and *test power source*.
