Se denomina Mal de la Piedra a la descomposición superficial de la piedra en forma de exfoliaciones, arenilla y desprendimiento de las capas externas. La erosión se debe principalmente a la polución, a aquellas sustancias que gravitan en la atmósfera, producto de la combustión, con lo cual se produce bióxido de azufre que provoca un proceso degenerativo en la piedra.

The Stone sickness
The term of the "sickness of stone" as such refers to a determined pathology occasioned by a concrete process, which is one of degradation suffered by the limestone rocks owing to the presence of atmospheric particles, forming a crust of calcine and sulphine that is very damaging. Carbonell de Massy (1993) explains the process of formation of these crusts.

La pregunta es sobre obras de rehabilitación de ingeniería civil, está bien claro en la explicación. Es la reacción ecoquímica que se produce en las piedras de los edificios,causada generalmente por la contaminación atmosférica, y que como consecuencia se produce un lento desmenuzamiento y disolución por la lluvia, perdiéndose no solamente capacidad resistente sino también patrimonio cultural en los edificios antiguos.
