Spanish term

nivel de aceite reductores

Spanish to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering tower cranes
The above appears in a typical monthly control of tower cranes (please see pdf for context). Does this have something to do with the gears???

Many thanks.

I agree, Nikki. This is yet another example of confounding technical jargon with bad grammar. They should NOT have skipped the second "de": "nivel de aceite DE reductores".
Nikki Graham (asker) Dec 24, 2007:
I think they mean nivel de aceite (oil level) of the "reductores"

gear case oil level

The only oil tower cranes use, is hydraulic oil. Pressure to the oil is provided by the gear hydraulic pump.
Since this looks like a trans of a trans, skip the "reductores". How it got into the jargon, I dunno.

Oil Change
The hoist gear oil must be changed after the first 100 operating hours then on an annual basis, at a minimum
thereafter. In severe duty applications, the gear oil should be changed every six months. Use the recommended
lubricants. Refer to the applicable hoist service manual or Braden Service Bulletin 503 Rev. 3
or later for the recommended lubricants.

The gear units are characterized by a low noise level. This is achieved by helical gears.
The gear unit housing is made of cast iron and in two parts.
It is also fitted with an oil sight glass for checking the oil level, a drain plug for oil change and a breather screw for venting the housing.

neutral bigedsenior : There would certainly be a gear box for the hoisting mechanism apart from the tower frame raising mechanism.

The gear box is actually a pump driven by a diesel engine or an heavy duty electrical motor. The hydraulic pressure that the pump provides is controled in the cabin by several levers that activate quite a lot of different mechanisms.
