Spanish term

pesqué una lisa

I fished the smooth one (sin comentarios...)

¿Qué traducción confiable me sugieren ustedes?

Muchas gracias.

mullet is a better term if you are not a scientist
Peer comment(s):

neutral bigedsenior : you can say 'I fished for mullet' or I went fishing for mullet', but NEVER 'fished A mullet'. I wasn't offering a tranlation fo the question, there were 2 good answers, but an example of the use of 'fished'.

the translation is saying he actually caught one, and not that he went to try to do it

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Now you have to teach me how I can fish one... Thank you so much."

I caught a 'river mullet'

I caught a mullet

and I suggest so only because you say that you're going to write your piece for consumption in the USA. Here, mullets are well known, certainly much more than loaches. Sea (shore) fishing here is identified to a good extent with mullets. If you fish in rivers, you look more for trout or salmon. - Incidentally, I changed your pair to Spanish/English. Good luck.
PS> If you could honestly make it a "golden mullet" (lisa dorada), it would obviously enhance the appeal.
