Italian term

In occasione della Prima alla Scala di Milano

Non-PRO Italian to English Art/Literary Music Legal proceeding
'Prima' meaning premiere, or soiree or anything better. For those of you not familiar with la Scala theatre in Milan and 'la prima' it is a very exclusive and posh event opening theatre season to which Italian celebrities and creme de la creme participate

Discussion

Noni Gilbert Riley May 16, 2007:
No problem here! IMO the more information you can be given, even if it patently obvious, the better for translation purposes. You can always ignore what is superfluous but you can´t invent or "intuit" what´s not there!
Angela Arnone May 15, 2007:
I'm sure you didn't mean to be patronizing but your comments about 'high culture' sounded a bit scathing. Especially as La Scala calls itself an opera house, and so Covent Garden, Sydney, the Metropolitan, even if they are also used for other events.
potra (asker) May 15, 2007:
I most certainly never intended to offend anyone, quite the contrary, I offered a general explanation so that everyone would promptly capture the significance of 'prima.' It would be quite silly to be patronizing a group of professionals to whom I am asking for help.
Angela Arnone May 15, 2007:
After all, this is the IT-EN community, right? And without wishing to offend, I might also suggest that too many capital letters are not acceptable in English either.
Angela Arnone May 15, 2007:
Apart from the fact that I was joking, if you didn't think we wouldn't know, why did you appraise us with "For those of you not familiar with la Scala theatre in Milan and 'la prima' it is a very exclusive and posh event opening theatre season to which"?
potra (asker) May 15, 2007:
To anyone who is 'aghast' about the thought that someone who is familair with the Italian language may not be familiar with La Scala! Please note that I do not believe that anyone who is Italian or is fluent in Italian, might not know about 'La Scala.' The few occasions I went to La Scala was to see ballet performances, so the 'building' functions as a theatre, whether it is an Opera House that also serves as a theatre, I leave that decision to 'high culture' prozians.
Thanks for all your suggestions.

On the occasion of the First Night/Premiere at La Scala in Milan/La Scala Premiere

You could just say "At" instead of "on the occasion of" but it doesn´t sound so fancy...
It could also be first performance, if it was a new work, but this is less likely.
The opera house is well known enough to include its article in English, and, IMO, omit the explanatory "opera house".

Peer comment(s):

agree Nicole Johnson : I also agree with this answer, again depending on the rest of the sentence. If you're referring to a specific work, then premiere may be a better option.

On the opening night at La Scala in Milan

I'm aghast at the thought that someone who is familair with the Italian language may not be familiar with La Scala!

Moreover, I might add that I am fairly certain it's an "opera house" as opposed to a "theatre" and the correct expression is the "opening night".

agree Nicole Johnson : Depending on the rest of the sentence you may or may not want to omit "the" before opening night.
