concertmaster; First chair, second chair

Good afternoon Telperie,

This is one area that I am positive about: my wife is a Junior HS orchestra director. In an orchestra, there is a concert master, who is the best player in the first chair, and helps tune the string section before the director comes out to do a final tuning. Then there are rows for each string instrument: First chair, second chair, etc. Each with about 5 or 6 [I do not remember] of each string instrument in each "chair".

I hope that this helps.

principal/section leader, second violins; first violin; concertino

and http://aula.el-mundo.es/aula/noticia.php/2000/06/21/aula9615... for explanation of the role of the concertino:
Concertino is not necessarily a soloist, and the term would appear to be used differently according to each orchestra (a bit like job names!)

Ah yes, and to clarify, it´s not leader of the second violins, but section leader (one of the options): the leader is of the entire orchestra, (sometimes the same as the concertino). By first and second violins, we mean playing in the group called first or second violins.
Hope you´re all thoroughly confused by now!
I was a second violin in the third orchestra at my secondary school. I was not destined for fame and fortune!
