disagree julesomura : The original Italian term certainly is viola DA gamba, not DE. In English, we say either "viol" or "viola da gamba"

viol = any one of several stringed musical instruments played with a bow, distinguished from the violin by its deeper ribs, flat back, sloping shoulders , number of string(usually six)and originally fretted neck.Viols, used chiefly in the 1500\'s and 1600\'s.

viola = a musical instrument shaped like violin, but slightly larger, tenor or alto violin . A viola has four string tuned a fifth below a violin .
