Dear members,

It has has been observed that some answerers hide many of their answers which have not been selected in order to improve the appearance of their performance in KudoZ.

While hiding your answers is allowed and will not be limited, there is a perception that the above described behavior is not fair and should be discouraged.

To this end, starting August 1st, answers hidden by these users will figure under the Answered tab in the KudoZ activity section of profiles, with the link to the question, but with "Answer hidden by answerer" instead of the source and target term.

They will also be added to the total count of Questions answered (shown on the main page of profiles) and in the statistics found in the KudoZ activity section.

This will apply to answers posted after August 1 by answerers who have hidden more than 10% of their total answers (but no less than 20 answers).

Best regards,

Jared

It had never occurred to me that my track record should be anything but visible! I delete when I realise that I am barking up totally the wrong tree and in order not to misinform/confuse future readers of the posting. Otherwise my unsatisfactory responses stay posted for all to see. Apart from anything else, they may of use for someone in a slightly different context, the links I include may be useful etc etc, and who know, I might even have been right!!

Do outsourcers look so close

Do outsourcers look so closely at Prozians' answer records for it to be so important not to be seen to get it wrong sometimes?

OK. Jul 22, 2008

I have never hidden any of my answers so far,and I am not going to do so in the future, either. It is absolutely all the same for me.Anyway,I think hiding your answer is only a nice option when you realise that you have entered the very same answer a few seconds after it has already been entered by somebody else, but I have never applied it so far,not even in such cases.

forgive Jul 22, 2008

And anyway:
there is the proverb 'to err is human',which means everybody can be wrong. So we have to forgive each other, and step forward.

I completely and totally and entirely agree. I don't mind to show others that I was wrong, and when I am I state it clearly in the my agrees to the right answers. I hide my answers when I was clearly wrong or when another identical answer arrived a minute earlier than mine. Askers are sometimes clumsy. I honestly don't care if my wrong reply is or is not shown in my list of answers or whether it affects or does not affect my statistics.

In Spanish we have this say: "Cree el ladrón que todos son de su condición". I.e. people really worried about their statistics think we all are. I don't care as long as I can help other people.

A question Jul 22, 2008

Will this modification be applied only to these particular users,or will it be applied to all Prozians?

Does anybody know anything about this ?

Measures to tackle damaging behaviours Jul 22, 2008

To me, the important matter and the one that's causing real problems every day is the everpresent lack of context. That is the aspect that deserves work and measures. This childish behaviour of hiding one's incorrect anwers is far from being a problem from my point of view...

Jared, just sheer curiosity: Can you please share with us just a ballpark figure of how many people consistently hide their non-chosen answers?

This measure will only affect those who meet the conditions described in my initial post, a small percentage of the community.

ProZ.com does not divulge this type of information unless there is a compelling reason.

Hmmm, don't think this could be considered a top secret information or against the privacy rules, couldn't it?

I did notice this behaviour Jul 22, 2008

In my pair, I have noticed right from the beginning (i.e. when I registered) that some answerers (especially the ones standing at the top part of the leaders board ) hide their answers as soon as they get a disagree, or even a neutral, as if they did not want to admit that sometimes, people know better than they do.

Alternative suggestion Jul 22, 2008

Jared wrote:

I don't think this should be a problem. As you said, Jared, this will only affect a minority, and even if I do hide my answers occasionally (as others said above, when I realise my answer is completely wrong or when it's identical with another one), these would never amount to 10% of my total answers.

I think another possible suggestion would be to make it impossible to hide answers once a question has been closed.
