Le répertoire civil est constitué par l'ensemble des extraits des demandes, actes et jugements qui, en vertu des textes particuliers se référant à ce répertoire, doivent être classés et conservés aux secrétariats-greffes des tribunaux de grande instance.

Les extraits sont inscrits sur un registre, jour par jour et par ordre numérique.

Article 1058

Le classement et la conservation des extraits sont assurés par le secrétariat-greffe du tribunal de grande instance dans le ressort duquel est née la personne concernée et par le service central d'état civil pour les personnes nées à l'étranger.
