Localization QA Process
- Internationalization Testing. This step is usually performed by the publisher, not the localization vendor. And it's done before the localization begins. In this process the engineers verify if the software was properly intenationalized. Two things are tested here:
a. Intenational support: Will the software be fully supported by the local platforms?(characters, scripts, OS, regional settings like date, time, etc., multi-byte languages, hardware like keyboards, etc.)
b. Localizability Testing: The product should be easy to localize. The translatable text should not completely embedded within the non-translatable code. The graphics should not contain translatable text. Can the text or graphics be offesive or confusing in some locales. Expansion: do dialoge boxes allow room for text expansion? A pseudo-translation should be performed before the files are sent to be translated.
- Localization Testing. Performed in the editor and in the running application. This step is performed by the vendor and it has two parts:
a. Linguistic Testing: It covers all the linguistic aspect in the project. It should be performed by the translator or an in-house linguistic engineer. They should make sure that all the translatable text has been translated accordingly (e.g. is 'copy' a verb, a noun?), hot-keys are correctly translated, are the numbers localized?, are the links broken?, terminology, translation per se, etc.
b. Cosmetic Testing. All the visual aspects: the text fits in the spaces (dialog boxes, sub-menues, etc.), accents should be displayed correctly, the extended characters should be displayed accordingly, are the hot keys unique in each page?, etc.
- Functionality Testing. This step is the final process and it's performed on each localized product to sort out any functionality problem. Are the local characters compatible with the application? is the application supported/compatible with local software? can the saved files be opened in other versions of the application?, etc. This process should be performed by the testers and engineers.
This is a very brief overview. As you can see, proofreading the text is just one of the steps of the whole QA process.
